Welcome to the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences (CD&S) web page. The program at SJSU was one of the first programs in California and we have a rich 40+ year history of providing excellent academic preparation and clinical experiences to prepare students for careers as speech-language pathologists, audiologists and individuals interested in pursuing doctoral study in either area.
Students in CD&S are seeking careers in the professions of speech-language pathology or audiology. Speech-language pathologists identify, evaluate and treat children and adults with speech-language, cognitive-communicative, and/or swallowing disorders. Audiologists identify, diagnose, and treat individuals with hearing or balance disorders. Parade Magazine recently identified a career as a Speech-Language Pathologist in their top 5 bright spots in the current economy.
Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, SJSU features a culturally and linguistically diverse educational environment. The CD&S Department reflects this diversity in its student body and faculty. The speech-language pathology program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation and is an approved program of the California Licensing Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
The Mission of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences is to provide high-quality academic and clinical preparation to students seeking careers working with individuals who have speech, language and hearing disorders, and their families. Guided by principles of evidence-based practice and working in collaboration with other professionals, our graduates will adhere to the highest ethical standard in serving the needs of our diverse community.
Equal Opportunity Policy:
The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences is committed to the principle of equal opportunity. The University, College and Department do not discriminate in the delivery of professional services or the conduct of research scholarly activity on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, gender-identity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, physical characteristics or disability.
